Your whole trip.
One calm line.

Flights, stays, drives and tours on one timeline you plan together, with when to leave for each. No account, and no server of ours: it all stays in iCloud.

Try it below: four friends, one car, San Francisco to Los Angeles.

The road trip in this demo: Pacific Coast Highway, San Francisco to Los Angeles, Fri 16 to Sat 24 April, with Alex, Jamie, Kim and Mo. On Tue 20 April they have a slow breakfast at the cabin in Big Sur until 11:15 AM. Leave Big Sur by 11:45 AM: 1 h 35 min down Highway 1 and 20 min to spare for the Hearst Castle tour at 1:40 PM. Nine days, one road: San Francisco, Half Moon Bay, Santa Cruz, Monterey and Carmel, Big Sur, Cambria, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Malibu and Los Angeles, with one rental car from San Francisco all the way to LAX.

The timeline of the road trip, Pacific Coast Highway, San Francisco to Los Angeles. Use the plan buttons to open a plan. Arrow keys move along the line, plus and minus zoom, 1 to 4 pick Trip, Days, Hours or Detail, N jumps to now. With a plan open, Alt and an arrow key moves it by one step.

Together

One plan for the whole group.

Instead of a notes app, a spreadsheet and the group chat.

  1. Send a link. Friends open it in the app on iPhone, iPad or Mac. No account to make: it’s iCloud sharing.
  2. Show a QR code. At the inn in Carmel, Kim scans it with the Camera.
  3. Invite Nearby. Your iPhone finds theirs over Bluetooth and Wi‑Fi and hands over the invitation, encrypted, with no email or QR code. Joining then goes through iCloud, so both need a connection.
  4. Everyone edits the same trip. Changes arrive within seconds, with a name and photo on them.

Join Nearby is on iPhone.

The app’s invitation for Pacific Coast Highway: a link, a QR code, then Invite Nearby finds Kim’s and Mo’s iPhones. Kim adds lunch at Olive & Ember in San Luis Obispo, and everyone sees it.

Add without typing

Share the booking. It lands on the line.

  1. Share the confirmation to Travel Timeline (just Timeline on your Home Screen): an email, PDF, screenshot, photo, Wallet pass or calendar file.
  2. Read on your device, with Apple Intelligence where it’s available. You check what was found, and can add it to Costs.
  3. It’s on the line, with its check-in and check-out windows. The booking is read on your device and its text isn’t kept; only the plan you add is saved.

iPhone, iPad and Mac

Four made-up bookings: a Bluebird Air boarding pass from Seattle to San Francisco, the Ridgeline Cabins confirmation email, a Coastline Rentals voucher and a Hearst Castle tour ticket. Each is shared to the app, checked, and appears on the trip’s timeline.

On the day

On the day, it knows what’s next.

The Now line, the next step and when to leave: in the app, on the Lock Screen and on Apple Watch.

Tuesday 20 April, Big Sur to Cambria: breakfast at the cabin, check out and leave at 11:45 AM, 1 h 35 min down Highway 1, the Hearst Castle tour at 1:40 PM, check-in at the Seafern Inn at 4:00 PM and dinner at The Driftwood Table at 7:00 PM.

Apple Watch

The next step, on your wrist.

  1. Today’s plans, and when to leave for the next one, with a countdown.
  2. Leave by turns blue a quarter of an hour before, and says Leave now in the last five minutes.
  3. The Next step complication moves on by itself, even while the app is closed.

Reads your journeys from iCloud. Plan on iPhone, iPad or Mac.

Apple Watch at 11:35 AM: Leave by 11:45 AM, in 10 minutes, for the Hearst Castle tour.

Lock Screen, widgets, Siri

It tells you before you ask.

  1. A Live Activity on travel days. Open the app on the morning of the flight, or tap Start Travel Day, and the Lock Screen counts down to leaving, with the day’s steps filling in, door to door.
  2. Widgets for Up Next and Today on the Home Screen, and Up Next on the Lock Screen.
  3. “When do we leave in Timeline?” Ask Siri, or use the Shortcuts app.
  4. Spotlight finds a plan by its name, place or booking code, right on the device.

Off the grid

No signal in the canyon. Still together.

  1. Trail mode passes messages phone to phone over Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth, up to about 50 to 100 m (150–300 ft), while Timeline is open, and phones pass them on to whoever they meet.
  2. “Where are you?” Each of them can answer with Share Once or Share Live, and you see how far away they are and which way.
  3. Voice messages, up to 30 seconds. Hold to talk.
  4. Save Map for Offline before you lose the signal: your trip’s places stay on the phone, with everyone’s last shared spot on top.

Trail mode on the Ewoldsen Trail above McWay Falls: Jamie and Kim are nearby, a few hundred feet away; Mo last shared his spot 0.3 miles northeast. Messages and a voice message pass from phone to phone.

Costs

Who paid what, and who owes whom.

  1. Add what someone paid and split it between the people you choose, in its own currency.
  2. See each person’s share, and link a cost to its plan or day.
  3. Settle up in a few payments: whoever owes most pays whoever is owed most. Here, three.

iPhone and iPad

Costs for the trip: $3,366.40 spent so far, settled in three payments: Mo pays Kim, Mo pays Jamie, you pay Jamie.

Mac and iPad

The whole trip, with room to think.

  1. One window per journey on the Mac, with every check and booking code beside the line, and a shortcut for most things.
  2. Drop a booking on the timeline, or add it from a file. You check it, and it lands on its day.
  3. The whole app on iPad: the line across the screen, the day beside it.
  4. Costs and Trail mode too, with offline maps and widgets.

The Mac has no Costs screen, Trail mode, offline maps or widgets.
